Congress Reaches Deal on Wiretapping Bill

WASHINGTON — After months of wrangling, Democratic and Republican leaders reached a deal Thursday that would re-write the rules for the government’s wiretapping powers, and would provide what amounts to limited immunity to the telephone companies that took part in President Bush’s warrantless eavesdropping program after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The deal would expand the government’s powers in some key respects. It would allow intelligence officials to use broad warrants to eavesdrop on foreign targets, and to conduct emergency wiretaps on American targets without warrants if it is determined that important national security information would be lost otherwise.

The deal would also make the phone companies involved in the post-Sept. 11 program immune from legal liability if a district court determines that they received valid requests from the government directing their participation in the warrantless wiretapping operation.

House Leaders Agree on War Funding

Instead, her mother, Rep. Deborah Pryce, stood on the House floor Wednesday evening and introduced a bill in Caroline’s name that would boost research funding for pediatric cancer — the kind that killed Caroline nine years ago.

“This is our graduation gift to her,” said Pryce, an Ohio Republican, choking back tears. She is retiring in December after 16 years in Congress, choosing to care for her daughter Mia, whom she adopted in 2002, three years after Caroline’s death.

Pryce, the only member of Congress who is a single mother of a young child, was once a rising star in the GOP. But she was facing a tough reelection fight in a district that is increasingly leaning Democratic, and she was growing tired of trying to balance work in Washington with home life in Ohio. So she decided not to run again.

Obama veep vetting team looks at retired military

WASHINGTON - Barack Obama is considering former top military leaders among his possible running mates, according to senators who met Tuesday with the Democratic presidential candidate’s vice presidential vetting team.

North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad told The Associated Press that the team asked him about potential candidates from three broad categories — current top elected officials, former top elected officials and former top military leaders.

Conrad would not disclose which names they discussed, and the Obama campaign has been keeping the process a closely guarded secret.

“We talked about many names,” Conrad said, including “some that are out of the box, but I think would be very well-received by the American people, including former top military leaders.”

A running mate from the military ranks could help address concerns that Obama lacks foreign policy experience, having served just three years in the Senate. It could also provide a counterpoint to the military bonafides of the Republican ticket, which will be led by Vietnam war hero John McCain.

Now Ralph Nader is polling at SIX PERCENT in the most recent AP national presidential poll, and without ANY party at all! No good can come of any of this! What’s worse, this vote thievery is spreading to local elections!

At the recent Massachusetts Democratic Convention, some guy named Ed O’Reilly had the unmitigated gall to force a primary battle with current Massachusetts Senator John Karry! This is the first time Kerry has faced a primary opponent since 1984. What’s worse, this Ed guy did this dirty deed with the help of yet another phony ripoff group. The oxymoronic “Progressive Democrats of America”. Everyone knows that the Democratic party, the real one, is a centrist party. There simply are no “progressives” to be found among true democrats. In any case, progressive is just the new name for commie!

The time has come for all these self styled “progressives” to be hauled before the house unrepublican activities committee! American workers are hurting. The country is in an economic slump, thousands of people are being laid off, and hundreds of companies are retrenching. With house values falling in many parts of the country and with gas prices soaring, many people are struggling from paycheck to paycheck.

The unfolding shakeout might ultimately be good for the economy, but it can be extremely painful for individuals. For companies, managing change is very important, not only for the well-being of their employees but also because to succeed, they need employees who are engaged, enthusiastic and energized — and not burned out.

A pair of psychologists recently evaluated hundreds of employees at a large North American university that was in the grip of painful change. The researchers wanted to find out whether there were factors that explained why some employees successfully weathered the transition and reengaged with their jobs, while others spiraled into cynicism and exhaustion — the classic signs of burnout.

Burnout has been long associated with being overworked and underpaid, but psychologists Christina Maslach and Michael Leiter found that these were not the crucial factors. The single biggest difference between employees who suffered burnout and those who did not was the whether they thought that they were being treated unfairly or fairly.

“These fairness issues can be huge,” said Maslach, a social psychologist at the University of California at Berkeley. “Issues around fairness are highly linked to the anger and cynicism that are linked to burnout.”
