As to Unity08, MoveOn, UFPJ, A.N.S.W.E.R, et al…
Resistance to the failed policies of our disaster of a government is growing. Regular folks like you and me are sick and tired of the same old, same old we have been getting for years from our “elected officials.” The push for change is on, the debate now must be what kind of change we need and want.
Groups like Unity08 are having some soul searching growing pains. The reports of them coming up short in their membership goals and their recent change of management personnel comes as complaints about censorship on their site cause them more grief then good. They have been too PR oriented and this has worked against them. Reports of the organization being connected to washingtOOn lobbyists and their organizational lean toward the two major parties are not a good sign for their growth. The dems have the DNC and the repubs have the RNC. If all Unity08 wants to be is another sales force for the two party system, they will not gain enough membership and support to have any real effect.
MoveOn has lost a lot of respect from many people because of their close ties to the dems. They need realize that the anti-war and social justice movements are over the idea that voting in the dems will make change. The mood in the country IS AWAY FROM BOTH THE DEMS AND REPUBS. Hurry and keep up MoveOn cause the rest of us are truly moving on!
United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of many smaller groups was founded on the idea that in order to bring many diverse groups together, the coalition would be “apolitical” and “non-partisan.” The idea is good in principle but it also causes problems from within and without the organization. For many of us, the two party system IS THE PROBLEM. It is difficult to make change in our present political system, to attempt ignore the fact that it is the TWO PARTY SYSTEM that makes change problematic is to lessen the support the organization gains and thus the power of said organization to make change. At their last national assembly, they decided:
This is good as far as it goes, but I believe they are wasting their time with efforts to “lobby” the government. I believe strongly that the two party system is corrupting our government, and working within said system is useless. I will, however take part in UFPJ protests as I have in past. A shame the UFPJ has moved away from the really large events toward smaller local events…
A.N.S.W.E.R is another organization that is working to stop the war. They have taken a stronger stand they any of these groups against the power elite that run our country. Their greatest single success has been their ability to generate an extremely diverse cultural makeup in their organization. This diversity has alas been quite lacking in many of the organizations working for change here in the US. This diversity does not come without difficulties for this organization. This diversity brings with it an organizational tilt toward work on issues that can be polarizing and “scare” other organizations away from them. I find some of the issues A.N.S.W.E.R works on to be longer term problems that can only be addressed by removing the corruption caused by our present two party system. That is a goal that can best be addressed by all these groups if they will just all come together TO STOP THIS DAMN WAR! On that, A.N.S.W.E.R is the last organization known to me that is currently still calling for truly massive demonstrations. I have attended these in past, and will in future. This is their latest announcement:
I’ll be there, hope you will join us!
Should anyone reading this have any other group working for change that they would like me to address in this blog, please leave a link in the comments section or email me at the address available under “about” in”ClapSo’s Links” located on the sidebar to your right.
The telepathic crickets have reminded me that tomorrow is the last Saturday of this month. Around here that means it’s time for another addition of ClapSo’s Video Fun House! I hope you’ll stop by tomorrow to view my version of Saturday morning “cartoons” for the all growed up folks!
